The project for the new Amba Aradam subway station consists in a complex and articulated system of public and functional spaces within the new station building. The project guideline was of course the relocation and enhancement of the archaeological site, found during the excavation of the metro station.

The design opportunity allowed for a radical rethinking of the public spaces intended for the enjoyment of the citizen, the subway user, the museum visitor or simply the resident. The project starts from the intent to give back to the city quality designed public spaces aimed at public use valorized by the historical pre-existing and traces of the past so important in this area. The project considers two final phases leading to, once the second phase works completed, the full integration between the archaeological site and the new museum and Aurelian Walls, which today are almost completely underground the new city level. In the presented functional scheme, the museum appears as an independent element but strongly integrated with the surrounding functions.

In particular, a new attic is introduced inside the station building at 27.15/26.60 level, called the museum level, connecting the street level with the underground levels of the museum and the subway. The new system of underground squares gives access to lower levels by creating large urban square systems and bringing the passenger inside the deeper levels of the metro by a slow approach. From the open space of Piazzale Ipponio to the underground squares, giving access to the museum area on the one side and to the underground station, on the other, passing through the "hybrid" space of the museum level that constitutes the main distribution framework of the underground system. The project provides for a clear division between the museum area and the distribution system of the subway station. The museum, visible from the large windows overlooking the underground square, can be seen from the outside, and visited entering the spaces from a foyer with ticket office, cafeteria and services. The subway is distributed from the new museum level that in the area towards San Giovanni is connected to the turnstiles area, located at 23.30 level.

The project envisages a clear division between the museum area and the distribution system of the underground station. The museum, visible from the large windows overlooking the underground square, is visible from the outside, but can be visited by entering the spaces from an atrium equipped with a ticket office, cafeteria and services. The underground is distributed starting from the new museum level, which in the area towards San Giovanni finds its junction and access to the turnstiles area, located at 23.30.
